VDO-Turbochargers-VW-Visual-Header-V2-4X3-1240X930

Turbochargers for 2.0l gasoline engines of Volkswagen Group

Accelerate systematically

This turbocharger model has been in large-scale production since 2015. The innovative RAAX design with its radial-axial turbine inflow ensures a faster charge pressure buildup during acceleration and consequently much faster reaction times. Since 2016, the Volkswagen Group’s gasoline engines equipped with this turbocharger model have continuously received various honors at the International Engine + Powertrain of the Year Awards event in the 1.8–2 liter and 150–250 hp classes. They have also won the International Engine of the Year award.

High performance and low wear

Technical specifications of VDO turbochargers for diesel engines of the Volkswagen Group

  • Extremely rapid response thanks to RAAX design with very low moment of inertia: noticeably less turbo lag, instant charge pressure
  • Electric wastegate system, combined with electric divert-air valve: precise charge pressure control, ideal for start-stop operation and frequent load changes
  • Designed for very high exhaust gas temperatures: reliable performance with high continuous loads and a sporty driving style
  • Water-cooled, low-friction bearing system: for less wear, longer service life, less heat stress
  • Milled aluminum compressor wheel: robust, light and efficient in pressure generation
  • Highly effective sealing system: reliably prevents oil and exhaust gas losses
  • High thermal efficiency for optimal engine performance: uses energy effectively, leading to better performance with less fuel consumption

Innovative RAAX-Design

VDO has been using cutting-edge, highly efficient turbocharger technology for years. An important milestone is RAAX turbine technology. It first went into series production in the Audi A3 and accelerates the response time to torque by over 20%.

Automotive-Engine
Novel turbine design

Due to the novel turbine design, the exhaust gas does not flow in at right angles, but from a radial-axial direction.

Energy-Wind
Modified air flow

This modified airflow, in conjunction with significantly smaller turbine blades, reduces the mass moment of inertia by around 40%.

Arrows-Arrow-Circle-Down
Lower emissions

The charging pressure builds up much faster and reduces emissions by up to 3%.
