In common rail systems, in contrast to conventional fuel-injection systems, pressure generation is separate from the fuel injection process.
This optimizes fuel injection in terms of quantity and timing. Some main components of electrically controlled diesel injection systems are: high-pressure pump, piezo injectors, rail, lines and engine control unit.
The high-pressure pump continually delivers diesel fuel into the common distributor line (rail) under pressure; the rail supplies fuel to the piezo injectors through the lines.
The piezo injectors are electrically controlled by the engine control unit so that they inject exactly the right amount of diesel fuel into the cylinders at exactly the right time.

Common rail diesel systems
As vehicle-specific systems they permit both direct and indirect driving of the fuel feed pump and high-pressure pump by the engine. The high-pressure pump delivers fuel at up to 2,500 bar, resulting in finer atomization and thus better combustion.
Piezo injectors
Piezo injectors permit extremely short switching times and free selection of injection start and injection volume in accordance with engine control unit (ECU) specifications.
System and injection pressure
The system pressure is optimally adjusted to the given operating conditions, regardless of engine speed.
Due to the rail’s storage volume, injection pressure remains nearly constant over the entire duration of the injection cycle.
Piezo diesel injection system
The piezo diesel injection system is operated with multiple pilot, main and post-injections. This lessens combustion noise, lowers mechanical stress and reduces exhaust emissions. Fuel economy is improved.
